Eye diseases such as age related macular degeneration (AMD) and Glaucoma are the number one and two causes of blindness respectively. In fact research has found that around half the people in Australia who have Glaucoma are not even aware they have it. The sooner these major causes of blindness are detected, the sooner treatment can be commenced. In fact the effects of Glaucoma can in most cases be stopped immediately with just eye drops.
Since early detection is so important, is there an instrument that can detect these diseases at the earliest possible stage?
Well in fact there is and it’s called an OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) and we have invested in this very expensive technology at optoMED. Most people have heard of CT scans or CAT scans as they are also known. The letter T stands for tomography and the OCT is a special form of tomography that uses harmless infra red light to examine the soft tissue under the surface of the retina and optic nerve.
Surely your eyesight is worth investing in an examination with an OCT especially if you are in the higher risk over 45 age group.
